SUMMARY:Open Science: Necessary but not enough
DESCRIPTION:Register here: https://forms.office.com/e/eFHjk1ZGCu\nContemporary science faces a profound poly-crisis: replication failures\, weak theories\, poor generalizability\, and declining public trust. I contend that these symptoms stem not merely from flawed practices or institutional pressures\, but from a deeper cultural pathology: Neomania\, or our collective obsession with innovation. This valorization of the new for its own sake has reshaped the scientific enterprise\, privileging novelty over reliability and fragmentation over coordination. In the second part of the talk\, I argue that Open Science—often claimed to be the cure—is in fact only half of one. The other half lies in something we’ve largely abandoned: scientific coordination\, including shared research programs\, common goals\, and a collective commitment to building knowledge that actually accumulates. Together\, these form the foundation of a constructive vision for rebuilding science as a coherent and truth-oriented system. \nSpeaker\nKrist Vaesen is an associate professor of Philosophy of Innovation at the Department of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences. He is also one of the founders of META/e\, the research center that studies the quality and reliability of science itself. META/e focuses on topics such as open science\, team science\, research reproducibility\, and the use of AI in research. \nWhere: TU/e campus\, Atlas 11.320
