SUMMARY:OSCE lunch meetup: How frustration led to the national open hardware infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:When: 27 October 2026\, 12:30-13:30\nLocation: TU Campus\, Carpo Pavilion\nSpeakers: Jerry de Vos\, Jurrian Doornbos\nLunch is provided! \nRegister here: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/9izFQXztjB \nWhen I was a student\, patenting was the only accepted route for sharing research hardware. That frustration led us to start the Delft Open Hardware initiative. Today\, OSHNED — Open-source Hardware Infrastructure for The Netherlands\, a national NWO-funded initiative\, connects six Dutch institutions to build an open hardware ecosystem. Join us to hear how grassroots frustration grew into national infrastructure\, and how you can get involved and play a role.

SUMMARY:[OSCE Lunch Meetup] Beyond Open Access: Towards a Fully Open-Source PhD
DESCRIPTION:When: 24 November 2026\, 12:30-13:30\nLocation: TU Campus\, Carpo Pavilion\nSpeakers: Katrien van Riet\n\nLunch is provided! \nRegister here: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/SW0jZXPtuF \nRecent NWO publishing requirements have accelerated the push toward open-access publishing and sharing underlying data in open repositories. However\, open access alone does not make research accessible to the general public. In the quest to make research truly accessible\, replicable\, and communicable\, more steps need to be taken. In this lunch talk\, I share my current journey towards creating a fully open-source PhD thesis. As a case-study\, I take the domain of my PhD research\, soft robotics\, a field that holds great potential for democratisation due to its use of low-cost materials and accessible manufacturing technology. I will present examples of how democratisation is currently approached in soft robotics\, share the steps I am taking to open-source my own doctoral work\, and discuss the practical challenges of making academic research genuinely usable by others. This talk explores what happens when you push open science: a fully open-source PhD.

SUMMARY:[OSCE Lunch meetup] From Public Video to Open Mobility Data: Reproducible Global Traffic Research with YouTube and AI
DESCRIPTION:When: 10 December 2026\, 12:30-13:30\nLocation: TU Campus\, Atlas 11.320\nSpeakers: Shadab Alam\n\nLunch is provided! \nRegister here: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/2zQ2wx4L6A \nPublic video platforms contain an enormous amount of naturalistic mobility data\, but turning this material into reproducible research requires much more than simply downloading videos. In this talk\, I will present our work on building scalable\, transparent\, and reusable mobility datasets from publicly available YouTube footage. \nI will introduce CROWD\, a global dataset of continuous urban driving covering more than 33963.47 hours of footage across 9\,868 localities in 238 countries and territories\, together with structured metadata and automatically generated object detections and tracks. I will then show how this resource can support global behavioural research through our Pedestrian Planet study\, which analyses pedestrian crossing behaviour across countries using measures such as crossing speed and crossing initiation time.\nFinally\, I will discuss our more recent work on automated and continuously updateable dataset construction\, where vision language models\, temporal segmentation\, geographic grounding\, provenance tracking\, and versioned outputs are combined to transform public video into structured research data. \nThroughout the talk\, I will focus on the open science challenges behind this work\, including reproducibility\, provenance\, dataset versioning\, copyright and privacy\, transparent automated annotation\, and how public web data can be made useful for scientific research without redistributing the underlying videos.
