SUMMARY:Responsible academic assessment: What do we value in science?
DESCRIPTION:Register here: https://forms.office.com/e/4DeezDs4dY\nAcademic assessment shapes what kind of science we value. Yet academic careers have traditionally been largely judged by publications and impact factors\, while open\, responsible\, and inclusive research practices remain under-recognized. \nThis session draws on the project “Recognizing and Rewarding Open Science” that ran through 2025\, which rethinks academic assessment at TU/e by embedding open\, responsible research\, integrity\, and inclusion into Promotion and Appointment Committee (BAC) decisions. Based on empirical research (interviews\, observations\, and policy analysis)\, the project develops training and tools to make assessments more transparent\, fair\, and aligned with diverse academic profiles. \nDuring our OSCE meetup\, you will experience a simulated BAC assessment as candidates\, committee members\, advisors\, or observers. The simulation is grounded in empirical findings from the Recognition & Rewards subproject and invites reflection on how assessment practices shape well-being\, social safety\, leadership\, and academic culture. \nWe will reflect together on questions such as: \n\nAre we already close to an inclusive and safe process of peer assessment?\nHow well are current assessment practices connected to such topics as well-being\, social safety\, openness\, and many others?\nHow do your lived experiences align with our research findings?\n\nJoin as a participant or observer\, and take part in the discussion and presentation of results afterwards. \nSpeakers\nAndrea Kis is a researcher and research policy advisor with a focus on metascience. She is a co‑founder of META/e and RRC/e\, currently coordinating the setup of the Committee on Responsible Collaborations. She was the project lead for ‘Responsible Academic Assessment at TU/e’. \nJulma Braat is an HR policy advisor with a focus on academic career pathways at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). She is the project lead for Recognition & Rewards and managed the project ‘Responsible Academic Assessment at TU/e’.

SUMMARY:OSC/e Lunch meetup: Good data management is the foundation of trustworthy research
DESCRIPTION:Are you conducting research at TU/e? From now on\, responsible management of your research data is not only a good practice: it’s also a requirement. The university has established a new Research Data Management (RDM) Framework Policy\, which aims to help you safeguard the future of your research findings and your career. In this session we will dive into the details of the Policy\, its practical implementation\, and the infrastructure that TU/e provides to keep your research project secure and future-proof. Join us to understand how this policy makes your work reproducible\, compliant with funders and publishers\, and fully protected.

SUMMARY:As a Data Steward\, I tried to make my own data FAIR—what could go wrong?
DESCRIPTION:Your Data Steward might tell you to make your data FAIR\, but what happens when they try to do it themselves? In this meet-up\, I will share my journey of making my own research data FAIR. My data will be about social and behavioral sciences (social psychology)\, but I believe my learning and suffering will be useful to researchers in other fields. No prior experience is needed\, just your curiosity on how to make your data FAIR.

SUMMARY:OSCE Lunch meetup: Why does code reproducibility matter and how to achieve it?
DESCRIPTION:This 1\,5hrs session explores the importance of reproducibility in research and how 4TU.ResearchData supports researchers in making their work more transparent and trustworthy. We’ll reflect on how 4TU.ResearchData piloted the facilitation of reproducibility checks within the CODECHECK initiative. Join us for a short presentation and open discussion on the value of checking code — and how it might fit into your own research workflow.

SUMMARY:OSC/e Lunch meetup: Preregistration and Registered Reports
DESCRIPTION:Studies in scientific literature often suffer from systematic biases toward statistically significant findings. Two of the most common sources of such bias are selective reporting and publication bias\, both of which can lead to misleading scientific claims. To address these issues\, Preregistration and Registered Reports have emerged as tools that aim to counteract such bias and allow peers to transparently evaluate the severity of claims made in published studies. At the same time\, replication studies have become increasingly important for testing the robustness of published findings and correcting scientific literature where necessary. Conducting a replication study is not merely a methodological exercise–it is a form of scientific scrutiny. Because it challenges or increases our confidence in previous work\, it carries a heightened responsibility to be conducted with rigor and transparency. In this workshop\, we will discuss how Preregistration and Registered Reports can strengthen replication efforts by minimizing bias\, increasing credibility and supporting the publication of replications. Participants will also receive practical guidance on how to preregister their replication studies in a way that maximizes transparency and scientific value.

SUMMARY:OSCE Meetup: The Publishing Trap board game
DESCRIPTION:This event is postponed until November \nThe Publishing Trap is an open-source board game that allows participants to explore the impact of scholarly communications choices and discuss the role of open access in research by following the lives of four researchers – from doctoral research to their academic legacies. The game is designed to be played by up to 4 teams with around 4 people per team. During the game\, we will also have a drink and a borrel together.

SUMMARY:OSCE Meetup: Should you sign your reviews?
DESCRIPTION:Peer review is one method of quality control in scientific publishing. A topic of discussion in the open science community is open peer review\, where the peer review reports are shared alongside the published article. As a reviewer\, you often have the possibility of signing your review\, to disclose your identity to the authors. In this meeting\, together with Daniel Lakens\, we will share experiences with signed vs anonymous reviews\, discuss positive and negative consequences of signing reviews\, with the goal to allow researchers to make an informed discussion about whether or not\, or when and when not\, to sign open peer reviews.

SUMMARY:OSCE Meetup: Data Foundry — Open Data for Design Research at TU/e
DESCRIPTION:Design Research is going through a phase of digital transformation: in our research\, we increasingly rely on data collected from remote contexts\, engage in data-enabled (co-)design\, and work with data-intensive tools and methods. Data Foundry was developed in the last 2-3 years to build a basis for such practices at the department level\, to allow students and researchers to easily collect data from a variety of sources for analysis\, visualization\, sharing\, and prototyping with data.

SUMMARY:OSCE Meetup: Jupyter – integrating notebooks in your research
DESCRIPTION:Notebooks have received an increasing amount of attention in the past few years as they provide an interface where code\, data\, and narrative can meet. By combining these elements in one document\, they help in documenting and communicating your analyses. In this talk\, I’ll give a brief introduction to Jupyter and also touch on more intermediate/advanced uses. We’ll go over and discuss the features\, advantages and disadvantages of the Jupyter environment (and notebooks in general). In the end\, I hope that those who were not yet familiar with Jupyter will take it for a spin to see if it fits their needs\, and those that were already familiar pick up a few tips and tricks.
